Short Introduction of Dolpa district

Dolpa is the largest and least developed district in Nepal. It is located in the western region of Nepal. However, Dolpa is filled with many mesmerising places to visit. A few major tempting sites in my neighbourhood are:

Dolpa

  • Yangzer Monastery
  • Shey Gumpa
  • Shey Phoksundo National Park
  • Shey-Phoksundo Lake
  • Suli Gad Waterfall
  • Pugmo Village
  • Mt. Putha

Yanzer Monastery

Best Places to Visit in Dolpa

Yanzer monastery was established in the 10th century in Dolpa. The Buddhist Gumpa is occupied by Himalayan people who practise their unique religion and tradition. It is located in Nijal village. Dolpo Buddha, a renowned Tulku Rinpoche has taken responsibility for its preservation and promotion. Moreover, it has been open for both domestic and international tourists.

Shey Gumpa

Shey Gumba

Shey Gumpa was established in the 11th century in upper Dolpo, Saldang. The Buddhist people use the monastery to conduct spiritual poojas and festivals like Lhosar. Sometimes people not only organize poojas and festivals but also conduct some relevant marriage functions. In addition, it also serves and provides accommodation to travellers. You will always find a monk there who takes care of the gumpa. On top of that, he helps travellers. The Shey Gumpa is mostly covered with red colour and a little touch of white.

Shey Phoksundo National Park

The National Park is situated in Suli Gad, Dolpa. Shey Phoksundo National Park was established in 1984 and covers 3,555 sq km for the protection of wildlife in the Himalayas. Specifically, you’ll get to see snow leopards and blue sheep if you are as lucky as I was. I was fortunate enough to witness the park when I was visiting my village.

Shey- Phoksundo Lake

Best Places to Visit in Dolpa

The deepest lake in Nepal is Shey-Phoksundo Lake. It is the lake with the best views and the bluest most transparent water. It takes about three days of consistent road trips at the beginning, trekking through vastly different landscapes of Dolpa to reach there. Summer is the perfect time for visitation. The villagers have already started to host tourists in their homes, homestays and traditional hotels. That is why it is convenient once you reach the lake as you get to immerse yourself in the local culture, tradition and lifestyle. So, I think it would be your lifetime and epic experience.

Suli Gad Waterfall

Best Places to Visit in Dolpa

I am not very specific about the number of waterfalls there in Dolpa, Suli Gad. However, the Suli Gad waterfall caught my attention with its spectacular and dangerous nature. Specifically, it originates from Shey Phoksundo Lake. Suli Gad waterfall as well as Phoksundo lake have promoted tourism in western Nepal. It is very risky to approach although it is impeccable.

Pugmo village

Recently, a traveller Sirjana Sizzu explored four new hidden lakes in Pugmo village at Kanjirowa Himal in Dolpa. It offers the extravagant beauty of the four lakes to the traveller. Each lake has a unique beauty that is Cho-Nangpa( Blue Lake), Cho-Karpo(White Lake), Cho Nakpo(Black Lake) and Cho Lugal. You can see all the lakes simultaneously by standing at a high point. That is the beauty of these lakes.

Mt. Putha

Mt. Putha is an adventurous mountain. It is for those who like to venture without technical difficulties. Mt. Putha is a rocky mountain. Thus, Mt. Putha is mostly covered with thick snow. A lot of people believe that Mt. Putha is safe to climb. Besides, it is part of the Dhaulagiri Range. Therefore, you can enjoy astonishing views once you reach the top.

My Recommendation

I would love to recommend the National Park and Shey Phoksundo Lake above all. It is like killing two birds with one stone as you will get to visit both when you enter the National Park. Furthermore, you will get to witness the natural beauty of the gigantic forest as well as the wildlife of the Himalayan region.
